Should wood be primed prior to exterior painting?

Any type of unfinished wood should always be primed prior to painting.

This includes exterior wood that needs painting.

Why?

Primer helps fill in the wood grain and creates a smoother surface for the finishing coat.

Unlike raw drywall, unfinished woods tend to soak up paint and the primer will help seal the surface to prevent this from happening.
